A major meeting of trade union leaders in education and teachers on strike since last February 6 was held at the Labor Exchange in Conakry. The aim of this meeting was to report on the meeting between the union leaders and President Alpha Conde, who called for the end of the movement. Teachers are calling for wage increases and the recruitment of temporary teachers.
Guinean teachers have decided to continue their strike on February 6th throughout the national territory, and they have come to listen to a report from their leaders who were at the presidential palace to meet President Alpha Condé.
“We will fight until the end! Until the last drop of our blood! Because we snatched the wage index in the blood! We will go to the end to achieve the objective we have set ourselves, that is to say, the correct and complete implementation of our points of claim … “, assures one of them.
This other trade unionist complains of the poor living conditions of the teachers, whom he describes as being left behind: “They have to pay us with a decent wage! It does not come from their pockets, it comes from the Guinean taxpayer! We, as teachers, have a right to lead a happy and correct life! ”
Teachers no longer want Alpha Condé’s promises but acts.
During their meeting on Wednesday at the presidential palace, Alpha Conde had promised to face their demands. “We do not want promises! There have been so many promises! We were promised 24,000 francs a bag of rice, we were promised a student: a tablet, we were promised a highway … We were promised too many things! We now want a correct application of what was said verbally. One is tired of the speech, rebels another. We want action! ”
In the meantime, the students and their parents take their pain in patience.
