While the possibility of a third term for Alpha Condé increasingly stirs up the Guinean political debate, the Head of the Delegation of the European Union in Guinea has just warned. Gérardus Gielen recalled that the Guinean constitution only provides for two terms.
“I consider (this debate) as speculation. For me, the Guinean constitution provides for two terms, “warned the European diplomat in Guinea.
The debate over the possibility of a third term for the current head of state who keeps the ambiguity on the issue, has resulted into polemics in Guinea for some time.
Gerardus Gielen of the EU warns: “The Guinean constitution provides only two mandates.”
The debate has been more crystallized with the recent statement of the National Police Director who “proclaimed” that Alpha Condé will be president for life, provoking the anger of the opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo who called Alpha Condé on the issue.
“I am not informed of any proposal to amend the constitution in relation to the number of terms in Guinea,” says Gérardus Gielen.
